James P. Zappen has research and teaching interests in digital rhetoric and digital media and U.S., Russian, and Chinese literature and culture.

His book titled The Rebirth of Dialogue: Bakhtin, Socrates, and the Rhetorical Tradition (2004: State University of New York Press), explores dialogical alternatives to traditional rhetorical theory and practice. More recent work includes “Digital Rhetoric and the Internet of Things,” in Theorizing Digital Rhetoric; “Affective Rhetoric in China’s Internet Culture, in Present Tense: A Journal of Rhetoric in Society; and journal articles on contemporary American literature, including “Affective Identification in Jennifer Egan’s A Visit from the Goon Squad,” in LIT: Literature Interpretation Theory, and “New York City as Dwelling Place: Reinventing the American Dream in Steven Millhauser’s Martin Dressler, Joseph O’Neill’s Netherland, and Atticus Lish’s Preparation for the Next Life,” in The Journal of American Culture.
